The State Council of Ticino presents dispatch on the new Faculty
In progress, the press conference to present dispatch on the establishment of a new Faculty of Biomedical Sciences and the creation of a Master in medicine at USI. Speakers at the conference are Manuele Bertoli (Director of DECS), Paolo Beltraminelli (Director of DSS), Piero Martinoli (USI’s President) and Sandro Rusconi (Director of DECS Division for Culture and University Studies). USI’s project is supported by Ticino’s State Council. The Cantonal Parliament will then discuss the topic for the necessary law amendments needed for the constitution of the new Faculty.

Scenography, Architecture and the Stage
The new series of five public lectures devoted to the relationship between architectural practice and stage art in the framework of public theatre evolution continues with Romeo Castellucci: among European’s most interesting scenographers and recipient of the 2013 Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival. The lecture will be held on Thursday, 20 March at 7.30pm in the Aula Magna of Mendrisio Campus.

Identity and Diversity in Swiss Political Posters between 1918 and 2010
To open the 2014 Week Against Racism, a presentation of the exhibit The Foreigner on Posters will be held on Friday, 21 March at 6pm in the Auditorium of Lugano Campus. The presentation foresees an intervention by State Council Norman Gobbi and the Dean of the Faculty of Communication Sciences Lorenzo Cantoni. To follow, speeches by prof. Francesco Garufo and researcher Christelle Maire, exhibit curators, and a debate moderated by the Cantonal Delegate for Integration Francesco Mismirigo.

High School Students discover Informatics to overcome Clichés
The high school class led by professor Claudio Arrivoli took part in an introduction to the discipline held by prof. Hauswirth, followed by the two days long practical course Informatics and Programming held by researchers Adamoli and Babazadeh. After the lecture Computer Fundamentals held by prof. Hormann, Maria Angela Narduzzo and Teseo Schneider, the students also had the chance to share time over a long coffee break with other professors of the Faculty including Dean Michele Lanza. The encounter was organised by Eng. Prevostini as part of the COESI programme for the promotion of informatics in schools.

SWISS NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (SNSF) |

Transitional measures: for the year 2014 the SNSF will replace ERC funding
From 26 February, researchers at Swiss universities will no longer be able to apply for European Research Council funds (ERC). The SNSF offers Swiss researchers a transitional measure for 2014 in order to fill this gap, thanks to a special financing programme. Submission deadlines for ERC grants (by 25 March for Starting Grants and by 20 May for Consolidator Grants) will remain in place.
