For the first Time four Start-ups from Ticino among the top 100 of Switzerland
Every year, the platform startup.ch selects the 100 most promising young Swiss companies among several thousands of potential candidates. The platform is provided by Swiss organizations and foundations willing to support new and innovative enterprises in collaboration with the Handelszeitung. The four companies from Ticino have all been “incubated” by our CP Start-up: Newscron (listed on position 38), Swissleg (51), Logograb (60) and Designergy (62). In the creation of all four enterprises USI graduates have had a founding role.

Meret Oppenheim Prize 2013 for Quintus Miller & Paola Maranta
Upon recommendation from the Swiss Federal Art Commission, every year the Federal Office of Culture awards one or more Meret Oppenheim prizes worth 40.000 CHF each to representatives of contemporary art and architecture. Quintus Miller – Full Professor at the Academy of Architecture and, since 1994, owner of a studio in Basel together with Paola Maranta – will receive the prize on Wednesday, 2 October, at 6 pm at the Kunsthalle of Bern.

International Conference on interpersonal Communication and social Interaction at USI
On 3 and 4 October, this subject will be addressed from various perspectives, such as doctor-patient communication, argumentation practices, as well as the web and social networks as new places of virtual interaction. The conference will also tackle issues linked to social dynamics in public spaces, communication in emergency situations and the use of Internet as a source for health-related information.

With the beginning of the new academic year also the public conference series on Architecture Lessons is being launched again. The first meeting will take place on Thursday, 3 October, at 7.30 pm in Aula Magna of Mendrisio Campus (Canavée Building). The three Belgium architects architecten de vylder vinck taillieu will be the protagonists of this first lecture.

Three international Awards for the Institute affiliated with USI and SUPSI
The high quality of IDSIA’s projects has been confirmed as, thanks to various research teams, the institute was attributed the Best Paper Award at the European Conference on Symbolic and Quantitative Approaches to Reasoning with Uncertainty 2013, the Google Best Student Paper Award at the UAI 2013 conference (one of the most important international meetings on uncertainty in the field of artificial intelligence) and the Video competitor award for the video Task Relevant Roadmaps: iCub demonstrations at the recent Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Seattle (USA).

Switzerland and the European Union between Cooperation and Integration
Switzerland’s peculiar “European policy” frequently makes the news. The University of Milan has dedicated an extensive research to the subject, which was published in the volume European Union and Switzerland between cooperation and integration. The publication will be presented by its editor, Massimo Condinanzi (Full Professor of European Union law) and by Alexis Lautenberg (ambassador and former head of the Swiss mission to the European Union). The guests will tackle issues related to the recent evolution of relationships between Switzerland and the EU, not only concerning well-known fiscal topics, but also with regard to the so-called “institutional question” and to the future of bilateral negotiations. The conference will be held on Monday, 7 October, at 5.30 pm, in room A21, on Lugano Campus.

Future Trends in Supercomputing
The IEEE Student Branch Lugano – a student association that is part of the prestigious professional network dedicated to innovation and technological excellence – offers a one-day workshop with the professors Michele Parrinello, Rolf Krause and Vincenzo Piuri, on Friday, 4 October, in room SI-006 (Lugano Campus). After a series of speeches, a guided tour of the CSCS, the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre, will follow. The event is open to the public, but requires previous registration.
