• Vilém Flusser, The Surprising Phenomenon of Human Communication, ed. by Rodrigo Maltez Novaes, Metaflux 2016
  Originally written in both English and French, The Surprising Phenomenon of Human Communication is a series of twelve essays that Vilém Flusser delivered as lectures in Aix-en-Provence, France, on several subjects ranging from communication media, memory, symbols, meaning, models, art, cybernetics, the Bible, and Brigitte Bardot. Although written in 1975, this early phenomenological study of changing aesthetic, ethical, and epistemological models, and of the current fundamental revolution in the structure of human communication, is a visionary and provocative polemic that can help us understand, or at least, gain a better view of what is happening in the world around us today: big data, centralized media power, mass media conglomerates, political aesthetics etc. Unpublished for almost forty years, The Surprising Phenomenon of Human Communication, now published for the first time, edited from Vilém Flusser’s original English typescript, is not only an important work from the author’s mid-career, just before the development of his seminal theories on technical images and technical imagination, but it also forms a continuous link with his other titles of the same period: Natural:Mind, Gestures, Mutation in Human Relations, Post-History, Vampyroteuthis infernalis, and Towards a Philosophy of Photography.
   
• Michael Hanke, Kommunikation - Medien - Kultur. Vilém Flusser und die Signatur der telematischen Gesellschaft, Kulturverlag Kadmos Berlin 2016 (forthcoming)
  Vilém Flusser, Theoretiker des Technobildes, Vordenker der neuen Medien und der telematischen Gesellschaft, wird in dieser Synopse seines Gesamtwerks, auch seinem Selbstverständnis gemäß, als Kommunikationstheoretiker und Kommunikologe in einer breiteren, philosophischen, wissenschafts- und kulturtheoretischen, gesellschaftskritischen Perspektive vorgestellt. Dafür wird der Entwicklungsgang seines Denkens rekonstruiert, angefangen von seiner brasilianischen, portugiesischsprachigen Werkphase bis hin zu seiner späteren deutschsprachigen, und von seiner frühen Tendenz zu Philosophie und Sprachphilosophie bis zu Kommunikations- und Kulturtheorie. Weil demnach der Mensch das Wesen ist, das Tricks erfunden hat, um Informationen zu speichern und weiterzugeben, stehen sowohl die zwischenmenschliche Kommunikation als auch alte und neue Medien im Zentrum der Betrachtung sowie die Dialektik von Text und Bild mit Blick auf die sich abzeichnenden neuen Möglichkeiten der digitalen Computerkultur. Mit Kommunikation, Medien und Kultur werden hier drei signifikante Grundbegriffe in Anschlag gebracht, um einen Zugang zu diesem mehrsprachigen, vielschichtigen und nach wie vor aktuellen Werk zu eröffnen.

  Eine neue Konkretisierung durch die Passagen der Abstraktion und Kalkulation. Vilém Flusser versuchte, die Künste im Angesicht unserer wesentlich technisch gewordenen Existenz neu zu denken. Im technischen Bild als künstlerischer Imagination sah er eine Alternative zur Reproduktion des Immergleichen – eine neue Einbildungskraft, die er in seinen Schriften formulierte und im Dialog mit Künstlern konkretisierte. Die Publikation behandelt Flussers spannungsreiches Verhältnis zu den Künsten und erweitert die Ausstellung mit aktuellen Forschungsbeiträgen und neuen Materialien.
   

• André Brayner de Farias (ed.), Vilém Flusser - Filosofia do desenraizamento, Clarinete Editora Porto Alegre 2015 (contributions by André Brayner Farias, Erick Felinto, Gabriela Reinaldo, Jair Inácio Tauchen, Márcio Seligmann-Silva, Rachel Costa, Rainer Guldin, Roberto Bartholo and Rodrigo Duarte)
  Vilém Flusser, nascido na Tchecoslováquia, foge do país por causa do nazismo. O autor buscou outros países, fixando-se no Brasil. A sobrevivência dependeu dessa condição de bodenloss, ou seja, sem solo. A sua produção é rica e abrange as mais diversas áreas como a teoria da comunicação, os estudos de mídia, as teorias da tradução, a filosofia da ficção, a filosofia da língua e da linguagem, os estudos culturais, a ontologia, a estética, a ética, a epistemologia. Em um acidente automobilístico, Flusser falece, em 1991 durante uma viagem para Praga, a sua cidade natal.

Call for papers

The November 2016 issue of the multilingual journal for cultural and media theory Flusser Studies focusses on the notions of self-translation, code-switching and translingualism in view of the formal set-up, the production and the reception of multilingual texts, literary and other.

In the course of the last few decades, self-translation and translingual writing in literary contexts have been studied in detail. These writing strategies, however, transcend the literary field. They can be found in disciplines ranging from the humanities to the natural sciences: philosophy, mathematics and psychoanalysis, to mention only a few. Self-translation and the transfer of knowledge are intimately linked. A perfect example in this respect is Vilém Flusser whose multilingual work based on systematic multiple and consecutive self-translation is poised on the very border of the disciplines.

With this issue, we intend to create a meeting ground for scholars from different areas in order to initiate a cross-disciplinary dialogue exploring the rich and promising potential of different kinds of translingual writing.
